1st EVER SUCCESSFUL CYCLING EXPEDITION FROM ROING - MAYODIA PASS IN ARUNACHAL PRADESH
December 2011: Vagabond Expeditions for the first time ever, successfully led a cycling expedition to Mayodia Pass (2565mts) in Arunachal Pradesh. The ten member team from India and UK started the expedition from Roing, a small township in Arunachal Pradesh and conquered the steep curves and bends to reach Mayodia through Roing-Hunli-Anini road. This was for the first time that anyone had cycled to Mayodia Pass.
The challenging cycling trip started early morning on the 2nd of December 2011 from the picturesque Dibang Valley Jungle Camp, located near the town. As our members hit the road on their Hercules ACT110 bikes they were greeted with dense forest overlooked by the steep and mountainous road that led to our destination. After 20kms and about a couple of hours of passing through the awe-inspiring sight of valleys and rivers our team reached the small hamlet of Tiwari Gaon. After cycling for 26kms and nearly about 21/2 hours our team reached the lunch sight. A 40 minute break for lunch and the team set forth again for the final goal of reaching the Mayodia pass still 31kms away. With every passing curve the terrains now got rougher and steeper, nevertheless, the breathtaking scenic views and the waterfalls kept the spirit of our team high as ever. After 56kms of mountain cycling and about 61/2 hours our team, the first to ever cycle all the way to Mayodia Pass, reached their destination, the Birding Cottage.
The next morning our team went about cycling to nearby areas after which they started their journey back to the Jungle Camp. The return journey was fairly easier and in about 3 hours the team was back at the Jungle Camp. The adventurous and thrilling cycling expedition, the first ever to Mayodia Pass, completed after a total of 110kms of cycling and endless smiles.
NEW CAVES & ROOT BRIDGES DISCOVERED IN EAST KHASI HILLS, MEGHALAYA
August 2011: Vagabond Expeditions recently led an exploratory trek to the East Khasi hills district in the state of Meghalaya and uncovered 2 new living root bridges and 5 smaller caves in the region of Kharashnong. The 3 member team with 2 local guides camped near the village of Mawshuit, a small but friendly khasi village standing on a ridge at an altitude of 1200 meters. Mawshuit at a distance of about 70 kms from Shillong can be reached after an hour’s trek from the village of Khrang, which is situated 30 Kms from Mawjrong on the Shillong-Cherrapunjee road.
Taking Mawshuit as the base, the team explored the nearby areas for 3 consecutive days while discovering some new trek trails. On the first day, the team reached the imposing root bridge over the Wahmuor ( Muor River) after a downhill trek of about 2 hours. The old bridge stands at a height of about 100 feet above the river with a length of about 20 feet. The river below forms a pool of crystal clear blue water with rock formations all around making it ideal for swimming. The bridge was used by the nearby villages till about 1996 to commute to the weekly market at Khrang but due to the construction of another road to the village, this trail has not been used since then. Though there is no suitable camping ground available, one can camp below the bridge on the rock bed. The river is suitable for fishing as the locals do using traditional fishing poles and nets.
After the bridge, our team trekked for another 2 hours uphill to reach the caves known locally as Krem Mawlyho. These are a cluster of smaller caves spread across the area. All of the caves with entrances barely small enough to crawl inside have a length of not more than 150 feet with 8-10 sq feet chambers inside. These caves make a great spot to keep first-timers and amateur cavers busy for a whole day. From here, the trek back to the village of Mawshuit takes about 1 and a half hour.
The team next day trekked down about 1 hour from the village taking another trail to the river…. ,another stunning place to swim, go fishing or just laze around. Camping here is possible on the rock beds near the rivers. The other route back to the village calls for a trek of about 1 hour through the river upstream with about knee deep water. This is undoubtedly the most thrilling and fun part of the trek. The last 1 hour trek after the river is a steep climb of about 2 hours’ crossing2 massive root bridges before reaching Mawshuit.
Our team has already with utmost care designed an adventure trip itinerary for our guests on this exploration work. This trip would be best suitable for officials and executives based in Guwahati looking for a short weekend trip and for other tourists as well. This adventure will be a perfect blend of trekking, caving, fishing, river walking and also our guests will have the chance of staying at a traditional khasi village while interacting with the locals and learn the Khasi way of life.
